Dear Readers — As you know, my last post announced that I was stepping away for Theater Ideas, and also from writing about theater entirely. That seemed right at the time, and I felt a sense of relief. But some of you expressed skepticism, and you turned out to be right. After a little over a month of reflection, I’ve had to admit to myself that there isn’t anything I enjoy thinking about more than theater.
But the month “off” was not a total waste: I realized that what I mostly don’t like thinking about anymore is current events in theater. When you write a blog or a newsletter, there is a very strong pull toward doing hot takes about the latest shiny object. And most of the time all the issue deserves is an emoji or gif. For instance:
“Deadline: Brooke Shields Elected Actors' Equity President”
Do I really need to say anything else? I think not. If something occurs in the world of theater that is interesting, I’ll respond.
But there are a LOT of things to write about, and I’m ready to get back at it.
More to come.
Oh, I'm so glad you decided to come back! Looking forward to reading all of your insights!
